The products we sell have many varied finished applications from Aerospace and Automotive to Oil and Gas production, to Defence and the Railway industry, I am sure there have been many times when you have sat and looked at a drawing and wondered the following:

  • What type of steel do I use for this job ?
  • I've never heard of the specification on the drawing ?
  • How will the specified material machine ?

The following information will help to answer the above questions, and perhaps other questions you may have.

Low Carbon Freecutting Steels

Widely used for the production of turned parts for the automotive and general engineering industries, the most common specifications include 220M07, 230M07, (EN1A) and the leaded version of these steels. Semi-freecutting steels suitable for case-hardening in this group are 210M15 and 214M15, (EN32M and EN202).

Low Carbon Steels

Usually known as mild steels the group includes specifications suitable for bending, forming, welding and case hardening. They are used for lightly stressed components and are generally available in round, square, hexagonal and flat section.
The most popular are 040A10, 070M20, 080A15, 080M15, (En2A,En3B,En32B).

Medium Carbon & Carbon Manganese Steels

Offering greater strength than mild steels they respond to heat treatment and include types suitable for induction and flame hardening. Depending on analysis and ruling section tensile strengths up to T range 850-1000 n/mm2 may be obtained although 700-850 N/mm2 is more common. Applications include gears, shafts, racks, pinions, studs, bolts, nuts, rollers, etc..

Types : 080M30, 080M40, 080A42, 080M50, 070M55, 150M19, ( EN5, EN8, EN43A, EN9, EN14A )
Free cutting carbons: 212M36, 212M44, 212A42, 226M44, ( EN8M, EN8DM )

Alloy Case - Hardening Steels

Case-hardening steels are specified when a hard wear resisting surface and a tough supporting core is required, the choice of steel will depend on the ruling section and core strength required for the component. Care should be observed in selecting heavily alloyed types for parts with a thin cross section such as gear teeth, as through hardening can result in brittleness and loss of shock resistance.

Types: 665M17, 655M13, 635M15, ( EN33, EN34, EN36, EN351 )

Alloy Direct Hardening Steels

Steels in this group are available with a combination of alloying elements including nickel, chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, they are supplied in the softened condition where after machining they can be hardened and tempered to a range of tensile strengths, or supplied in the finally heat treated condition where they are machinable and can be put into service without heat treatment.

Induction hardening of the surface can also be carried out on many of the specifications if required. These grades are suitable for a wide range of applications where high strength and resistance to shock is important.

Types: 605M36, 708M40, 709M40, 817M40, ( EN16, EN19, EN24 )
